The reason for the updates is simple, google and other search engines send robots to trawl your website regularly looking for new links and current content, if no new content is found over a period of 2-3 months you will (gradually) start to lose your position in the search engine rankings meaning you may appear on page 2-3 of search engines when previously you may have appeared on the first page.

The easiest way to view it is a simple checklist, 1:have I used meta tags, 2:have I named the images correctly, 3:am I using alt tags on my images, 4:are the dates of my last added website content current or outdated, 5:am I using geo location tags (for services offered in local areas) in my portfolio, 6:are there call to actions in the content I have written that links to other areas of my website, 7:have I used social media to push introductions to content and lead potential customers to my website.
